The Postcard Project Crossroads Juvenile Center
Brooklyn, NY These postcards were created for "Art and Social Activism: A Visual Research Project". This project was funded through The Deans Grant for Student Research at New York University. Through this project young women incarcerated at a juvenile detention center in Brooklyn, NY selected social issues relevant to their lives as incarcerated teens and created artwork about these issues. The young women then chose an audience to mail their artwork to, for example, one young woman chose to send her postcard to every family court judge in New York City. The recipients were encouraged to respond through email to the young women. Through this project students explored the power of social activism and art as a means to create fruitful dialogue between different communities. |
